Icehotel

It began in 1989 as an igloo built for an art exhibition. Visitors asked to sleep in it. Every winter since, a new hotel has been cut from the frozen Torne River beside the village.
Artists from around the world apply to design the art suites. Each room is carved by hand, so no two seasons look the same. In spring the building melts back into the river it came from.
Icehotel 365, opened in 2016, stays frozen all year with the help of solar power. Warm rooms and cabins sit alongside both buildings for guests who want one cold night and several comfortable ones. Kiruna airport is a short drive away.
