Heating and cooling fundamentals

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning — the systems that move heat into, out of, and around your home. In Australian homes this ranges from split-system air conditioners and ducted systems to portable heaters and ceiling fans, each with its own quirks.

However they differ, they share a principle: they move air and transfer heat. Their efficiency depends heavily on airflow, maintenance and how sensibly they are used. A well-maintained system in a well-managed home is dramatically cheaper to run than a neglected one.

What to watch for

Weak or uneven airflow

Rooms that never quite reach temperature, or vents barely moving air, often point to a filter or airflow issue.

Airflow principles

Comfort is mostly airflow

Heating and cooling systems are often blamed for problems that are really about airflow. A system starved of air — by a clogged filter, blocked vents or furniture in the wrong place — works harder, costs more and struggles to reach the temperature you set. Before assuming a system is failing, it is worth understanding how freely air is moving through it.

The filter is the heart of this. It protects the system and keeps indoor air cleaner, and it is the one element most within a homeowner’s reasonable reach. A clean filter is the cheapest efficiency upgrade most homes have available.
