These checklists are meant to be used, not just read. Tap any item to tick it off; a small bar shows your progress, and each list remembers where you got to on this device. They are general starting points — adapt them to your own home, and treat anything involving heights, electricity or gas as work to approach with caution or hand to a professional.
Moving into a new home
- Locate the main water shut-off valve
- Find the switchboard and test safety switches
- Locate the gas shut-off (if applicable)
- Test smoke alarms and note their age
- Check the hot water system age and type
- Note the meter locations (power, water, gas)
- Find stormwater and drainage outlets
- Check window and door locks
- Locate the inverter and monitoring (if solar)
Preparing for storms
- Clear gutters and downpipes
- Secure or store loose outdoor items
- Check stormwater drains are clear
- Trim branches near the roof and lines
- Confirm the main shut-offs are accessible
- Charge devices and check torches
- Park vehicles away from large trees
- Review your emergency contacts
Holiday shutdown
- Turn off non-essential appliances at the wall
- Consider the hot water system setting
- Check no taps are left dripping
- Clear perishable food
- Set timers or smart lighting
- Ask someone to check the property
- Confirm security and locks
- Empty bins and clean drains
Monthly inspection routine
- Glance at the switchboard and reset any trips
- Check under sinks for damp
- Inspect and clean HVAC filters if in heavy use
- Test a smoke alarm
- Look at the inverter status (if solar)
- Walk the perimeter for new issues
- Note the water meter with everything off
Annual home review
- Book or do a gutter clean
- Service heating and cooling
- Consider a termite inspection
- Review smoke alarm ages and batteries
- Check the hot water system condition
- Inspect the roof line from the ground
- Update your home maintenance record
- Review insurance and key documents
Electrical safety walk-through
- Test all safety switches (RCDs)
- Check for warm or discoloured outlets
- Retire damaged cords and power boards
- Note any flickering lights
- Confirm the switchboard is labelled and clear
- Check smoke alarms
Water & plumbing check
- Confirm you can find the main shut-off
- Check under sinks and around the hot water unit
- Watch the meter with all water off
- Test drains for slow flow
- Look for damp or musty smells
- Check outdoor taps and hoses
Seasonal change-over
- Switch HVAC focus (heating/cooling)
- Clean or replace filters
- Adjust curtains and draught management
- Check gutters for the coming season
- Review pest prevention for the season
- Tidy and prepare outdoor areas
Pest prevention sweep
- Store food securely and clean spills
- Seal gaps around pipes and doors
- Fix damp areas and leaks
- Trim vegetation away from walls
- Move firewood and mulch from the house
- Look for droppings or mud tubes
Energy efficiency review
- Shift heavy appliance use into daylight (if solar)
- Check HVAC filters and settings
- Manage draughts and insulation gaps
- Use curtains and fans wisely
- Note unusually high bills to investigate
- Learn your inverter/monitoring normal
